The Indian men’s hockey team suffered a setback ahead of the Commonwealth Games final against Australia when young midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad was ruled out of the gold medal struggle due to a knee injury.

Vivek Sagar, along with skipper Manpreet Singh, has been a livewire in midfield during India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games here and came close to scoring against Canada in a Pool B match before being thwarted by rival defense.

Vivek Sagar had also put Akashdeep Singh in the circle against South Africa with a penetrating pass, but the forward could not score in the semi-finals. India, however, defeated the Proteas 3-2 to make it to the final.

This is a big blow to India They aim to win their first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games as they will now play with only 17 members.

“This is to inform you that Indian men’s hockey team midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad will not be available to play the final against Australia at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games today. He suffered a minor knee injury and has been advised rest. The team will play with 17 members today,” Hockey India said in a statement on Monday.
