Vivo Fold First Look Video: How is Vivo’s first foldable smartphone?

Vivo Fold was recently showcased at the Vivo Tech Day event in Delhi. There is no information about when the Vivo foldable smartphone will be launched India Resembling two Vivo X80s, the smartphone comes with a host of new features like an under-display fingerprint scanner, a unique hinge and much more. Here’s an exclusive first look at Vivo’s latest foldable smartphone.

The Vivo Fold looks like two Vivo X80s that are sandwiched together in a very nicely packaged folio design. The Vivo Fold has a more proportional external display which is more usable than the tall aspect ratio of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Vivo Fold looks like it would be more convenient to use as a normal phone when folded, but still bulky, of course.

One thing that Vivo has been able to achieve is putting an under-display inside the display of the Vivo Fold, something other brands had to contend with. How Vivo has achieved this is that the company has used titanium alloy sheets with a mix of polymers under the Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) folding display. This material allows ultrasonic rays to pass through the titanium alloy sheet.

Vivo’s hinge mechanism is also new. The company has used a reinforced hinge mechanism which reduces the creases on the foldable display. During the Tech Day presentation, Vivo told us that the hinge of the Vivo Fold allows the display to fold into a water drop-like shape instead of the U-like fold that other foldable smartphones offer in the market. This reduces the importance of the crease. While the crease is still very much visible, it is far less prominent than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. The hinge of the Vivo Fold also stays at any angle, allowing the user to stand up the phone, or use it to click group pictures. Or the picture itself.

Overall, the Vivo Fold is a well made foldable smartphone. It felt sturdy in my hands, and I was confident when turning or opening the device, even with one hand. For a first generation foldable, it’s good build quality. The hinge mechanism and ultrasonic fingerprint sensor are the two most attractive design elements on the Vivo Foldbe. However, if the smartphone will be a viable competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, it depends on more extensive testing. We got a few minutes with the phone during the Vivo Tech Day event, but this was just to experience the device and not test it. While I wait to test out the Vivo Fold, and expect the brand to bring it to India, the design and other elements of the smartphone look very promising and at times, better than the most popular foldables. Samsung needs to compete in the foldable market, and this product looks like it could do very well.
