The premium smartphone market in India is highly competitive. With smartphones available in the under Rs 40,000 category, it is not easy for users to choose a smartphone that suits their budget and requirement. Considering the amount of competition, smartphone makers are playing every trick in the book to attract customers. Vivo It is the latest manufacturer to bring something that no one has tried so far in the smartphone market – a color-changing back panel.
Vivo V23 Pro comes in as a direct competitor of choice OnePlus 9R, realme gt neo 2, Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G, and like. The base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant of the smartphone is priced at Rs 38,990, while the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant costs Rs 43,990 in India. The smartphone offers several promising features apart from its color-changing back panel and dual front cameras. I have been using Vivo V23 Pro for the past few weeks and in this article, I will tell you what I like about the smartphone and what I do not, and finally, should you spend money on Vivo V23 Pro Or should go for other similar options in the market. Let’s join in.
Design
The thing Vivo has focused the most on this smartphone is the design. Of course, the color-changing Ag is the fluorite glass back panel that turns a shade of golden to coral blue when exposed to sunlight or UV light. This is definitely the most attractive feature of the smartphone and works very well, giving you two color options. Of course, if you have a case, it won’t work unless it’s a transparent case. Apart from this, Vivo V23 Pro is also super lightweight and its weight is just 171 grams. Compared to my chunky OnePlus 7 Pro that I bought more than 2.5 years ago, it feels featherweight. The slim profile of the smartphone also makes it easy to hold and use.
What I don’t like here is the curved screen, which drops slightly from the side, and the notch that houses the two front cameras. Sure, it makes the smartphone look more premium, but it also invites a bunch of casual touches. The camera module is also slightly larger in terms of surface area, with the lens only taking up about 1/4th the space. Overall, Vivo has put a lot of thought into the design and it has paid off. The smartphone looks premium and feels super lightweight.
Display
Vivo V23 Pro has a 6.56-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel with 90Hz refresh rate. An AMOLED panel is longer lasting and more color accurate than an LCD display, but the FHD+ resolution isn’t the best in class and you only get 90Hz, compared to 120Hz refresh on competing devices like the OnePlus 9R, Realme GT Neo compared to the rate. 2, and the like. While 90Hz is enough to make the experience smooth, it still falls short of the 120Hz that other smartphones offer, and this is something that many people will consider when spending close to Rs 40,000 on a smartphone. Vivo doesn’t elaborate on the touch response rate on the Vivo V23 Pro, but during my usage, it felt less responsive than the displays on the Realme GT Neo 2 and the OnePlus 9R. It’s still a decent display, and makes watching videos and playing games a pleasant experience, but lags well behind the competition in terms of both resolution and refresh rate.
performance and battery
The Vivo V23 Pro uit we got was 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. The smartphone is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 chipset which is a competitor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset that powers smartphones like the Realme GT Neo 2 and the OnePlus 9R. In terms of multitasking and gaming, the Vivo V23 Pro 5G didn’t have any issues. The smartphone has enough RAM to handle as many apps as you want at the same time and shows no sign of lag even in split-screen view.
Gaming on the smartphone is also quite smooth. It runs Battlegrounds Mobile India on maximum graphics at high frame rate and handles it smoothly without heating up. The Vivo V23 Pro performed well on all levels during my testing, be it gaming or using multiple apps. Of course, 8GB of RAM is enough for any kind of smartphone and paired with the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset, it only delivers decent results. No app crashes or lags, nor overheating, even during an hour-long gaming session, but that was all limited to our testing. It remains to be seen how the Vivo V23 Pro 5G performs when it comes to Instagram reels, as this is something that even high-end smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and OnePlus 9 Pro struggle with.
The battery of the smartphone is also quite impressive. It gave me an average of over 10 hours of screen time, which is fantastic, considering it’s not the biggest battery unit. The Vivo V23 Pro packs a 4,300mAh unit, and is supposed to last a long time. Now, this is due to the Chinese manufacturer’s superb power management considering that I used the smartphone at 90Hz refresh rate on manual brightness settings all the time. Another factor here is the AMOLED display’s ability to dim individual pixels on and off, also saving power. 44W fast charging is also quite fast. While it doesn’t charge the smartphone at 44W all the time, as the company mentioned, it still easily charges the phone to 100 percent in under an hour. Good thing
camera
The camera is also something that Vivo says has been the focus-point on the Vivo V23 Pro (it has “professional photography” embossed on the top of the frame). In real-world conditions, the camera of Vivo V23 Pro is decent. It takes good and detailed pictures in outdoor lighting which looks good even when placed on a bigger screen. Photos are crisp and provide a decent level of detail, but color accuracy is a bit low. Sometimes, photographs can be somewhat overexposed, but this is a very subjective thing and cannot be judged on the basis of a person’s eyes. Even indoors, photos look good, as far as lighting is adequate. In low light conditions, the camera takes a while to capture the image and the results are slightly blurry.
In portrait mode, the camera of the Vivo V23 Pro impressed me the most as it does a great job of focusing on the subject and blurring the background. The best part here is that the Vivo V23 Pro doesn’t have too much background blur or sharp edges. Works well in terms of keeping things subtle and doesn’t make the use of AI obvious.
Vivo V23 Pro has a dual front camera setup consisting of a 50-megapixel primary shooter and an 8-megapixel wide angle shooter. According to me the results of the front camera are just above average. While the rear camera does a good job of hiding the AI interference, the front camera makes it quite clear. The wide-angle shooter does not give a good quality picture, and these are unnecessary filters that beautify or “whiten” your face. We no longer need these in smartphones, there are third party apps if users want to beautify their photos beyond what they are captured by the camera.
One useful feature of the front camera is the dual flash. You can set the lighting between different levels of warm and cool where two LED flashes at the top corners of the screen light up your face. This is a great feature that many users will appreciate. However, there is one thing that we are not able to use this front LED flash during video calls – a feature which I hope Vivo will bring with a software update in the future.
Decision
The Vivo V23 Pro is a well designed smartphone that comes with a very obvious differentiating factor. The smartphone not only comes with a color-changing design, it is also a solid performer with a nice 90Hz AMOLED display. The Vivo V23 Pro has some quirky features like dual front flash with adjustable profile and a decent rear camera. There may be better options in this price range but if you value the “cool” factor and keep something different from anyone else, then Vivo V23 Pro is the phone for you.
