Vizianagaram district administration has proposed walking zones in select routes to promote fitness among residents and improve the green cover in the Fort City.
It was observed that many are not interested in morning walks owing to pollution and vehicular traffic, even in the early hours. A few travel 2-3 km to reach Vijji stadium, where walking tracks are available.
Vizianagaram Collector B.R. Ambedkar, who observed this issue, said many will not skip their morning walk if a pollution-free environment is available in their vicinity.
He said the stretch between SBI Main Branch and Clock Tower junction will be declared a morning walking zone so that vehicle movement can be stopped on the road at that time. Vehicles can take the adjacent tank bund road.
Walking zones will be announced in Cantonment, Vuda Colony, Ring Road and other places as well. Opinion of locals would be sought before taking a final decision on the proposal.
He has also felt that more greenery within the commercial areas will also reduce air pollution. “Compared to previous years, air pollution has come down significantly due to the measures taken by the government. We will develop walking zones and greenery on a par with major cities soon,” he added.
G. Vinod Kumar of the Rotary Club of Vizianagaram said the government’s proposal will be a blessing for the city residents. “In the absence of walking facilities and parks close to them, many are unable to focus on fitness. The elderly can’t travel all the way to Vijji stadium just for walking. We will extend support to the government by developing green belt within the city,” he added.
