VMC plans to rejuvenate three canals in Vijayawada

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is planning to rejuvenate the major water bodies in the city limits by eliminating the discharge of untreated sewage and sewage.

The civic body plans to start the project under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT 2.0) with the funds of the 15th Finance Commission.

Pollution of the three canals, Bandar Canal, Rives Canal and Eluru Canal passing through the city and the Krishna River, due to the discharge of sewage has also been a major concern in the city and downstream areas where canal water is sourced for drinking. and irrigation purposes.

Over the years, due to several initiatives taken by the civic body, the amount of sewage and single-use plastic waste discharged into water bodies has come down, but there has been no permanent solution.

The VMC has recognized that the pollution of the canals due to the release of large quantities of raw sewage has significantly deteriorated the surface water quality and environmental condition of the city.

To address the issue, the civic body has prepared a detailed project report and on Friday sought tenders from the concerned companies to conduct a comprehensive study.

Over a period of two-and-a-half months, gaps in existing infrastructure, polluters causing canal pollution and diversion of untreated sewage to treatment plants will be studied.

Necessary work will be taken up after preparation of DPR. Three canals and the Krishna river as well as Payakapuram Cheruvu will also be studied.
