As assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh begin today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged all voters of the state to participate in the “holy festival of democracy” by exercising their franchise.
“Today is the first phase of voting Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections, I request all the voters to participate enthusiastically in this holy festival of democracy by following the rules of COVID-19. Remember – Vote first, then refreshment!” PM Modi said in a tweet (roughly translated from Hindi).
vote Voting for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh elections has started from 7 am today in 58 assembly seats in 11 districts. Voting will conclude at 6 pm today.
The districts where voting is being held today include Mathura, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Hapur, Shamli, Baghpat, Aligarh, Agra and Gautam Buddha Nagar.
623 candidates are in the fray in the first phase of assembly elections, while around 2.27 crore voters will decide the fate of these candidates.
Police have sealed the state’s borders and strict vigil is being maintained to maintain peace in the 58 assembly constituencies where polling will be held today.
Voting is to be held in seven phases in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
