Arbasar-Sumeet started the initiative with the participation of the children of the locality
Arbasar-Sumeet, a company outsourced to undertake conservation works in seven areas of the Greater Chennai Corporation, has started an initiative to paint walls at Tamil Nadu Urban Housing Development Board houses in Kannagi Nagar to improve cleanliness in the area.
Hari Balaji, head of Urbser-Sumeet’s Department of Information, Communications and Education, said the idea was to focus on the areas between buildings that would normally be dumping sites.
He said the company worked with residents to understand their needs and expectations about what could be featured. He said that one of the things he highlighted was paintings that were attractive to children so that they could play in those areas.
“He felt that when such places would be reclaimed and used by children, there would be an impetus to keep those places clean,” said Mr. Balaji.
The initiative was started with the participation of the children living there. While professional artists and volunteers created the outlines, children and youth living in the tenements helped to paint them with colours.
In addition to this initiative, the Greater Chennai Corporation has also engaged professional artists from abroad to create large wall paintings on buildings in Kannagi Nagar.
