Coimbatore: pushcart This will be a thing of the past in Coimbatore as the municipal corporation plans to phase them out and implement light commercial vehicles And in their place electric vehicles.
The municipal corporation will get 105 light commercial vehicles in November. They will be posted in the wards.
Corporation commissioner M Pratap said that each light commercial vehicle is being purchased for Rs 7.45 lakh. A total of Rs 7.82 crore will be spent on the purchase of 105 vehicles.
There is a plan to buy 100 more vehicles in the coming days, for which approval has been sought from the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration.
In addition to light commercial vehicles, 100 electric vehicles will be procured. The cost of each vehicle will be Rs 2.5 lakh.
Pratap said that he has tested three models suitable for door-to-door garbage collection In recent times. Soon one of them will be finalized and orders will be placed. Delivery will take two months.
“Electric vehicles are environment-friendly. The vehicles will be smaller in size and suitable for collecting garbage in narrow lanes where larger vehicles will find it difficult to move,” he said.
Vehicles are best suited for door to door garbage collection as the work will be faster as compared to push carts. He said pushcarts would soon be a thing of the past.
Recently, the civic body proposed to buy 600 dumper coaches as most of the coaches in the city are in damaged condition. A dumper bin is not available in many places where this is important.
The commissioner said that out of 600 coaches, around 450 have already arrived in batches. The delay was caused by a shortage of steel due to the ongoing Russo-Ukraine War. The remaining coaches are expected to arrive in a few weeks, he added.
