Watch: 25 injured in stampede at Covid vaccination center in West Bengal

In Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, 25 people were injured today after hundreds of local residents started a stampede while trying to enter the COVID-19 vaccination center simultaneously.

Around six of them were seriously injured in today’s incident and are undergoing treatment at the Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital, a senior official told the news agency. PTI.

“As soon as the main gate of Dhupguri health center was opened, several people pushed each other and tried to enter. There was a stampede-like situation. Several women were injured. We will investigate the matter,” the official said. are.”

Neighbors claimed that hundreds of people queued up outside the vaccination center since morning and social distancing protocols were flouted. When asked about the reasons for the stampede, the official said, “We are probing the matter.

According to preliminary investigation, those who were in the queue tried to enter the center fearing shortage of vaccine doses. The vaccination program at the facility has been put on hold following the incident, the official said.

Meanwhile, West Bengal’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 18,434 after 11 more people succumbed to the disease on Monday, said a bulletin issued by the health department.

It added that the tally rose to 15,48,058 after 510 people tested positive for the infection.

In the last 24 hours, 647 patients have recovered from the disease, slightly improving the discharge rate to 98.23 per cent.

So far 15,20,702 people have been cured of coronavirus in West Bengal.

The number of active cases now stands at 8,922.
