Gujarati cuisine is as rich and pervasive as its culture. It has a history of its own which is a thousand years old. The very idea of Gujarati cuisine reminds us of Dhokla, Fafda, Jalebi, Undhiyu etc. We agree that each of these dishes helps define Gujarati food culture, but trust us, this is just the tip of the iceberg. One such classic Gujarati dish is Mohanthal. It is a traditional Gujarati sweet made with gram flour, ghee, sugar and nuts. It is rich, delicious and melts in our mouth in no time. It has a unique creamy taste that leaves a strong impression on every palate. And this is the reason why Mohanthal remains an integral part of the sweets spread on every festival or special occasion.
This Diwali, let’s prepare Mohanthal at home without much effort to increase the spread of the festival. We found the classic Mohanthal recipe, shared by food vlogger Parul on her YouTube channel Cook With Parul. let’s take a look.

How to make Gujarati-Special Mohanthal:
- Take gram flour in a bowl and add the mixture of milk and ghee to it. Mix everything well. Rest is for 10 minutes.
- Now pour this mixture into the grinding jar and blend.
- Put ghee in a pan and add ground gram flour. Stir continuously. Cook till it becomes soft and fluffy.
- Slowly add milk and stir to get a soft and creamy texture.
- When oil starts leaving the mixture, turn off the flame and stir for some time.
- Grease the tray of barfi and keep it on butter paper. Keep aside.
- Make sugar syrup and pour in the besan mixture and cook for a minute.
- Transfer the mixture to the tray and let it set.
- Put a silver leaf on it and cut it into barfi.
Delicious Mohanthal is ready to eat. The best part is that you can store this Mohanthal for 10 days.
