A man rescued a burning lorry in Kerala, averted a major tragedy

One man’s quick thinking averted a major tragedy in Kerala’s Kodancherry town. A lorry laden with rice straw caught fire after it came in contact with an overhead power line on Sunday. manorama online, The driver of the lorry stood helpless, certain that his vehicle would be destroyed in the fire – but a man swung into action to save the lorry and avert a major tragedy.

Shaji Varghese made his heroic entry after the lorry driver jumped from his vehicle and unsuccessfully tried to douse the fire, which started around 12.30 pm on Sunday. Mr. Varghese, known as Shaji Pappan in his hometown, boarded a lorry and escorted it to an empty playground to protect the city and its residents from a possible explosion. Not only did he show prudence in driving the burning lorry away from the congested area, but Mr. Varghese also managed to save the burning vehicle.

According to HinduHe steered the lorry in a ‘zigzag’ manner so as to lower the burning load as much as possible. Mr Varghese, along with other volunteers, managed to prevent the vehicle from burning down and managed the situation safely till the fire brigade arrived.

“I have been working as a heavy vehicle driver for 25 years,” said Mr. Verghese asianet news, “I feel that my past experiences dealing with similar risky situations in my village and abroad helped me to face the challenge.”

The 45-year-old said he has been invited to several public functions since footage of his heroism went viral on social media, and has received calls of praise from friends and family.

The officials of Mukkam Fire and Rescue Services also appreciated the timely intervention of Mr. Varghese. Senior fire and rescue officer Pius Augustine said the fire station was located 20 km from the accident site. Mr Augustine said the impact of the fire could not have been foreseen if he had not controlled the situation.
