Pang Fa is a female Asian elephant from the Berlin Zoo.
Elephants are highly intelligent creatures. The mental abilities of this large animal are far beyond our current understanding. Recently, a video of a self-taught elephant peeling bananas gave viewers a glimpse into the animal’s wide-ranging skills.
However, the video, which was included in a recent studyDemonstrates that a very unique Asian elephant named Pang Fa learned how to peel bananas on his own while living at the Berlin Zoo.
She only uses it on yellow-brown bananas, first breaking them by shaking off the pulp and removing the thick rind.
The Asian elephant Pang Fa grasps the pulp with the tip of its trunk to eat it, and then throws away the rind, the study reports published in the journal Nature. current biology On 10 April. The shaking and peeling process continues until there is no or very little pulp inside the peel, and any residue is inspected repeatedly with a trunk tip.

The newspaper claims that Pang Fa only eats yellow bananas and avoids brown bananas. Brown bananas are accepted by Pang Fa, but she usually discards them after a quick inspection.
“We discovered a very unique behavior,” said Michael Brecht of the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, in a statement released by Cell Press.
“What makes Pang Fa’s banana peels so unique is a combination of the factors finesse, speed, personality, and basically human origin, rather than a behavioral element.”
