American scientist Bill Nye explained the reason behind different skin colors in his viral video.
American scientist and entertainer Bill Nye is known for his ingenious ways of explaining various theories of science. This time he explained casteism through scientific theory. In a video posted by former American basketball professional Rex Chapman, we see Mr. Barber explaining the reason behind the varied skin colours. Mr. Barber is seen in front of a world map. The numbering of colors on the map shows how much ultraviolet light from the Sun falls at each latitude. The areas near the equator receive the greatest amount of sunlight and the concentration decreases towards the poles. Mr. Ni shows us another map with different shades of brown. “It turns out that everyone on Earth is descended from the people who lived in Africa,” he says.
Mr Nee describes how different groups of humans spread around the world and adapted to their new environment. The skins were adapted to balance between vitamin D generation and folate breakdown. Mr. Ni then says, “When the ultraviolet varies, our skin color varies.” In the end, he says, “But we’re all one species. But we’re not treating each other fairly. Not everyone is getting a single blow. So it’s time to change things up.” “
Mr. Chapman wrote, “Bill Nye is destroying racism in a minute. ‘We are all one species…” The video spread like wildfire on Twitter and has been viewed over 5.7 million times. Watch it below:

This triggered a discussion on the breed and species on the microblogging platform. One user reiterated Mr. Barber’s point by adding more insight into the evolution of Homo sapiens. He wrote, “50,000 years ago, four siblings shared this world. Homo sapiens, Neanderthal, Denisovan, Homo floresiensis. Now only we live, and every single person on earth is Homo sapiens. One species, one Caste.”

Another compared different animals belonging to the same genus and species. “Genetically, we are all alike,” he wrote.
Genetically we are all alike. Just like with many other creatures. In the same way that a German Shepard and a Doberman Pinscher may look different but they are still the same genus and species (Canis familiaris), a Sphynx and Maine Coon are both still Felis catus.

There shouldn’t even be a need to prove why casteism is wrong

While users found the video quite practical, others were skeptical.
How do you think racists can be influenced by this rational scientific argument for the past two years?

It is not destroying racism though. Racism is a power structure.

This user wrote, “There have always been people who will take advantage of our perceived differences for their own personal gain.”
Sounds too simple… maybe even for some. But as we have seen recently, there are and always have been people who will exploit our perceived differences for their personal gain.

Someone even compared racism to an anti-vaccination campaign.
Racism is just another shade of antivax, it has nothing to do with science, it’s all about emotions.
