The gates of the crest of the Yagachi reservoir at Belur in Karnataka’s Hassan district were opened on the night of May 19 as the water level reached the maximum capacity following heavy rains in the catchment area. Parts of Belur, Mudigere and Chikkamagaluru taluks have been receiving heavy rains, increasing the water inflow into the reservoir.
The water level reached 3164.06 feet as against the maximum 3164.90 feet around 10 pm on May 19. The officials released 500 cusecs of water from the reservoir. The reservoir is said to have filled for the first time in the month of May. The reservoir has a water holding capacity of 3.603 TMC and a living capacity of 3.055 TMC. The flow was 370 cusecs.
Earlier on May 18, the authorities had issued an alert to the people below to release water from the reservoir.
