PSL is working with the idea of changing its draft system for recruiting players for its various teams along with the auction system which has been employed by the IPL since its inception. Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja feels such a change will help build their T20 tournament with enough financial strength that it will be placed in the same bracket as its Indian counterpart.
“We need to build new assets to be financially independent,” Raja said. espncricinfo, “We have nothing but PSL and ICC funds for now. The model has been debated since next year; I want to convert it to auction model from next year. Market forces are favourable, but we will sit down with franchise owners to discuss it.”
Raja also feels that the change in the auction system will also raise the profile of the Pakistan Super League and make it as lucrative as the IPL. “It’s a money game. When the economy of cricket in Pakistan grows, our respect will increase. The main driver of that financial economy is the PSL. If we take PSL in the auction model, increase the purse, then I will put it in the IPL bracket. And then we will see who goes to play IPL over PSL.”
The auction system involves players who bid with different teams to secure their services. This ensures that players end up with lucrative deals.
“Each side’s purse will grow, and they’ll have to spend money if they want to improve. When you go over it from the draft system, the world’s talent suddenly becomes available to you. I talked to a few franchise owners.” They’re quite happy to experiment with it. I’ll talk to others as well. It’s in the embryonic stage, but it’s at the top of my wish list,” King explained.
