West Bengal: After a scuffle with BJP leaders, the Election Commission sought a report from the state government

The Election Commission has sought a report from the West Bengal government by 4 pm on Monday after BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh was allegedly assaulted. Bhawanipur Assembly Constituency earlier in the day.

Also, party MP Arjun Singh, who is in charge of the BJP’s campaign in the area, faced slogans of ‘go back’ by the ruling TMC workers.

Ghosh was campaigning for party candidate Priyanka Tibrewal, who is up against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the constituency, where the bypolls will be held on September 30.

The leader was allegedly pushed by TMC workers when he went inside a vaccination camp in Jodubbur Bazar area.

The TMC, in its turn, alleged that Ghosh’s bodyguard had used firearms to intimidate the mob.

TMC supporters present at the spot allegedly pushed Ghosh out and demanded to raise slogans saying he was campaigning in the government vaccination programme.

Ghosh was taken out of the camp by his security personnel and left in his car. An angry Ghosh later told reporters that the TMC attacked and thrashed him without any provocation and injured a BJP worker.

“We will take up this issue with the Election Commission. What kind of election is this?” He asked.

Moreover, Singh was reportedly called ‘Bohiragato’ (outsider) as he roamed the area seeking votes. The MP represents the Barrackpore constituency in North 24 Parganas district.

He accused the state administration and police of not doing anything even when MPs and national level opposition leaders are being attacked.

High drama marked the incident as a strong police force surrounded the area and slogan-shouting TMC workers gathered nearby.

TMC leader Firhad Hakim, a close confidant of Banerjee, accused the BJP of instigating people to create unrest in the peaceful middle-class neighbourhood.

“The BJP, sensing defeat, is resorting to provocation. It is better to ignore them. Common people are opposing them for spreading hatred, lies and personal attacks,” Hakim said.

In a tweet, the TMC alleged that Ghosh’s bodyguard had used firearms to intimidate people.

“@BJP4Bengal is at a new low! How dare you target (public) in broad daylight? Don’t people have the right to protest against leaders they don’t support? Such a gross violation of human rights Shameful! It compromises on the safety and security of people in Bhawanipur!” The party tweeted.
