Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh resigned from his post ahead of a crucial meeting of the Congress Legislature Party, in the wake of a months-long power struggle that polarized the ruling party in the state, which was headed for elections in nearly four months. The decision came after a meeting of MLAs close to the Chief Minister at his official residence in Chandigarh. Earlier in the day, Amarinder Singh called up Congress President Sonia Gandhi and expressed his anguish at the “insult” he received from her.
He submitted his resignation along with his council of ministers.
“I feel humiliated…”
An angry Singh stood outside the Governor’s House and explained the reason behind his decision. “I have been humiliated thrice by the Congress leadership in the last two months… They called MLAs to Delhi twice and now the CLP here in Chandigarh today,” the Captain said. He said he took the decision and informed Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the morning. that he would resign.
Then, he angrily said that he would not accept the next chief minister before talking to his ministers.
“Obviously they (Congress high command) don’t have faith in me and I didn’t think I could handle my job. But I was feeling humiliated by the way he handled the whole matter. “Let them appoint whomever they trust,” he said, taking a dig at the party leadership.
“They can make the person they trust (the next CM). My future options are still open. I will discuss my future course of action with my colleagues.”
