Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Tuesday said there is no harm in taking a break but the timing should be better. Azharuddin’s remarks came after Kohli was asked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a break in January to spend some time with his family. Significantly, Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s daughter Vamika will turn one year old on 11 January 2022.

Also, opener Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Test series against South Africa starting on December 26.

“Virat Kohli has informed that he is not available for the ODI series and Rohit Sharma is not available for the upcoming Test. There is no harm in taking a break but the timing should be better. This just confirms the speculations about the rift. Neither will giving up on another form of cricket,” Azharuddin tweeted.

Kohli, India’s captain in the longest format, is set to miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa.

Earlier in the day, sources privy to the developments confirmed to ANI that Kohli has indeed asked the board for a short break in January next year.

“Yes, Kohli has sought a short break in January to spend some time with his family. This effectively means he will be ruled out of the ODI series against South Africa,” the source said.
