Sandwiches are a favorite breakfast dish because of their ease of preparation, lightness and nutritional content. They offer versatility in materials and customization, making them a popular choice. However, the way the sandwiches are cut can vary depending on personal preference. While some individuals prefer an oblique cut, others prefer a straight center cut. If you often encounter this situation, you can identify it with this article. An online discussion has started in response to a recent tweet about the best way to cut a sandwich.

Twitter user @TrungTPhan shared the picture of the sandwich on the micro-blogging platform. In the photo, we can see two sandwiches – one sliced diagonally and the other sliced in the middle. “The geometry is too complicated to explain here but cutting a sandwich diagonally gives you more sandwich,” read the text in the photo. While in the image, the diagonally sliced sandwich certainly looks larger, there is no evidence to prove this fact. Check out the tweet here:

Since being shared, the tweet has garnered over 9.8 million views, 42.4K likes and thousands of retweets. The dilemma sparked a debate among Twitteratis about the best way to cut the sandwich. While some agreed that a diagonally cut sandwich gives you a larger portion size, others seem to disagree with this explanation. Some users also said that they do not like to cut their sandwich at all. One person wrote, “Wrong. If you cut the sandwich diagonally to the right, you will now get more sandwiches. This is called the resultant sandwich of the second order.”
Another person wrote, “There is indeed a valid reason behind the diagonal cut, but it escapes true mathematicians.”
“No matter how you cut it, you always have less sandwich when you cut it. Some of it always sticks to the knife,” read a third comment.

The slant is strictly when preparing for others, eg retail, so that they can see the contents. Small squares are best, horizontal half is acceptable. Vertical half a bit weird? — Simone Clinton (@simoneclinton) April 2, 2023
