In a series of tweets, Cathcart said, “We are completely back up and running now. We know that people today use WhatsApp to connect with their friends, family, businesses, community groups and more. We were unable to – a humble reminder of how much people and organizations rely on our app every day.”

“We take our mission seriously, and I’m grateful to everyone who worked hard to bring our service back to you with the credibility you’ve come to expect from @WhatsApp. We’ll learn from it and grow, and Will continue to work to provide you with a simple, secure and reliable private messaging app,” Cathcart added.

WhatsApp said on Twitter early Tuesday: “Sorry to all those who haven’t been able to use WhatsApp today. We are slowly and carefully getting WhatsApp working again. Thank you very much for your patience.” Thank you. We will continue to keep you updated when we have more information to share.”

Monday’s shutdown has left many services under the Facebook corporate umbrella, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, inaccessible.

Facebook apologized but didn’t immediately say what caused the failure, the largest ever tracked down by web monitoring group Downdetector.

Several Facebook employees, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they believe it was due to an internal mistake in how Internet traffic is routed to its systems. Reuters.
