The wheels of justice have “completely collapsed” after PDP president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday granted bail to a convict in the 2018 Kathua rape case by a Punjab court. On 21 December, the Punjab and Haryana High Court suspended the remaining sentence and jail term of sacked police sub-inspector Anand Dutta and ordered that he be released on production of bailable bond.

“Disturbed that the policeman convicted of destruction of evidence in the Kathua rape case has been granted bail and his jail term has been suspended. When a girl child is raped and put to death without justice, it becomes clear that the wheel of justice has completely collapsed.”

An eight-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Kathua district in January 2018 and the verdict in the case was pronounced by a court in Pathankot, Punjab on June 10, 2019, where the case was transferred on directions. Supreme court.

The court convicted six people, including main accused Sanji Ram, sacked Special Police Officer Deepak Khajuria and Parvesh Kumar, who were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Three sacked policemen Anand Dutta, Tilak Raj and Surendra Verma were sentenced to five years in prison for obstructing physical evidence. Dutta has already served more than half of the sentence awarded, while the sentence of co-accused Tilak Raj was also suspended by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on December 16.
