R Sridhar was unhappy with the fielding of Shubman Gill in Ahmedabad in 2021.
The 23-year-old Gill is currently the best young player in the team. He also became the fastest Indian to reach 1000 ODI runs. Apart from this, he is also considered to be a good fielder who takes his catches.
India’s young opening batsman Shubman Gill is considered to be the next big player in Indian cricket. After scoring a century against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram, he scored a double hundred in ODI cricket against New Zealand in Hyderabad, which speaks volumes about this talented youngster from Punjab. Remembering his book ‘Coaching Beyond: My days with the Indian’ Cricket team,’ Sridhar wrote how the next generation of Indian cricketers feel they are a ‘finished product’ when it comes to fielding.
He recalled how ‘things boiled over’ with Shubman against England in Ahmedabad after which he had to give him a long lecture. He alleged that Gill was reluctant to work hard while fielding.
“In Ahmedabad, during the last Test against England in March 2021, things boiled over with Shubman. I thought about talking to Ravi about it but held my horses and took them out for lunch.”
“I told him, ‘You’re supposed to be the next big thing. People are looking at you from a leadership perspective. As a future leader, the one thing you must bring is motivation. You must have a presence on the field and when you If you do something, you should do it with intention. It is not just doing it for the sake of the team. Do it for yourself. Do it for your own satisfaction, not because the captain wants you there. What you do out there should be an inspiration to the whole team.”

Former PCB chairman calls up Young India Opener ‘mini Rohit Sharma’
Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Rameez Raja drew comparisons between young Shubman Gill and his skipper Rohit Sharma. The two have forged a solid partnership as the new opening pair of the Indian team in white-ball cricket. They have already shared several 100-plus partnerships at the top as the selectors have picked Gill as the opening batsman for ODIs. World Cup on an experienced Shikhar Dhawan.
Gill made his case very strong to be included in an elusive list of players for the World Cup squad by hitting a fine double century against New Zealand in the first ODI.
Raja said that Shubman managed to eke out extra time playing the ball, which has been called for by Rohit over the years, suggesting that the young opener doesn’t need to change anything.
“Shubman Gill looks like a mini-Rohit Sharma. He has extra time and he looks good. He has enough potential. Aggression will also develop over time. He doesn’t need to change anything. He had recently scored a double century,” said Raja on his YouTube channel.
