All India Congress Committee (AICC) central observers Ajay Maken and Harish Chaudhary are expected to stay in Chandigarh.
According to reports, former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar and cabinet minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are the frontrunners to replace Amarinder Singh. Others in the race include Ambika Soni and Vijay Inder Singla.
However, according to the party source, it will not contest the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections under the leadership of the new CM.
Meanwhile, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has unanimously passed a resolution giving party president Sonia Gandhi the power to nominate the new CM of Punjab.
Addressing the media after the CLP meeting, Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat said that the party has sent two resolutions to the high command which were passed in the Congress Legislature Party meeting.
“We had a tradition of requesting the Congress president to choose the chief minister. The party’s Punjab unit maintained the tradition and unanimously passed a resolution asking Sonia Gandhi to choose the new chief minister,” Rawat said.
“We have sent two resolutions to the party high command which were passed in the Congress Legislature Party meeting today. We are waiting for their (party high command) decision,” he said.

Amarinder resigns
Singh on Saturday met Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit and submitted his resignation.
“I had informed Congress President Sonia Gandhi this morning that I will tender my resignation today. There was an element of doubt in the party that I cannot run the government. I feel humiliated,” Singh said after resigning.
He said the central leadership has summoned him thrice in the last two months.
Singh said that the party high command can make whoever has confidence in the next CM.

However, later Amarinder Singh said that he would oppose the name of the state party president. Name of Navjot Singh Sidhu For the new CM face.
“…Navjot Singh Sidhu is an incompetent man, he is going to be a disaster. I will oppose his name for the next CM face,” said Amarinder Singh.
“He is a friend of (Pakistan Army Chief) Qamar Javed Bajwa and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, I will oppose it if he is chosen as the next CM face,” the news agency quoted him as saying.
When the political tussle in the Punjab Congress intensified in August, the party’s central leadership tried to bury the hatch by appointing Navjot Singh Sidhu as party chief against Amarinder Singh’s wishes.
