Origin of Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day

After the Indian Constitution came into effect, the country was divided into states on the basis of linguistic boundaries. Under the States Recognition Act, 1956, Bombay was recognized as a state. At the time of Bombay’s formation, there were people speaking languages like Marathi, Gujarati, Konkani and Kutchi.

This amalgamation of various local languages into one state resulted in uproar and distress. Due to these linguistic differences, the sanctity of the state was getting hit again and again. Movements began demanding the separation of states with Gujarati and Kutchi speaking people and those with Marathi and Konkani speaking people. The Samyukta Maharashtra movement and the Mahagujarat movement became the face of these demands.

Seeing the momentum of protests in various corners of the state, the Government of India decided to frame the Bombay Reorganization Act. After it was passed in Parliament, Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat. The law got a green signal on May 1, 1960, and since then, the day is celebrated separately in the two states as Maharashtra and Gujarat Day.
