Ningol Chakouba festival is celebrated with the theme of strengthening the bond of love between married women (Ningol) to their paternal families.
Manipur, with its abundant natural beauty, is home to many ethnic communities. Ningol Chakouba is one of all the festivals and celebrations that keep the unity and tradition of the state intact. It is celebrated on the second lunar day in the Hiangei month of the Manipur calendar. This festival is mainly celebrated among married women (Ningol) with the theme of strengthening the bond of love between their paternal families.
Ningol Chakouba is celebrated throughout the region of Manipur. Originally only the people of Meitei Pangal community used to celebrate this festival. But now, it is marked by other communities in Manipur.
It is a festival of family reunion, where sisters bless brothers. It strengthens the bond of a woman with her brother, sister and parents.
On this auspicious day, married women are invited to their ancestral home for a feast (chakouba), which is held along with other family members. And when the festival ends, brothers, uncles and fathers (and any male in the family) give gifts to the married women. In return, women also bring special gifts for their families.
