The Assam government had said on September 2 that it would continue to crack down on madrassas found involved in jihadist activities.
The claim came after the minority-based All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) threatened to approach the Supreme Court against “increasing incidents” of demolition of madrassas that allegedly promoted radical activities.

We are not against madrassas. But those with links to al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent and the Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla team will have to be dismantled. If we do not take action, the people of Assam may be killed in attacks by two terrorist organisations,” Information Minister Piyush Hazarika told reporters.
He said that Islamic institutions with terrorist links are trying to radicalize people and make them religious fundamentalists. “Then they will be used to detonate bombs in the state. A development oriented government cannot allow such activities.
The minister, however, said it would be wrong to portray Muslims as anti-nationals. “We must acknowledge the community members for helping the administration in apprehending suspected extremists and jihadi supporters and bringing down madrassas,” he said.
Mr Hazarika, considered close to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accused the AIUDF and the Congress of being supporters of jihadi activities.
“These two parties have many jihadi supporters. Whenever the government takes any tough step, they are sad. But we are not afraid of them and we will continue to take action,” he said while appealing to the AIUDF to educate people and keep them away from anti-national activities.
AIUDF chief and Dhubri MP on Wednesday, Maulana Badruddin Ajmal He had appealed to the Assam government to stop the “bulldozer raj” and threatened to approach the apex court if the demolition of madrassas continued.
