“Will Take Appropriate Steps”: Oppo India Responds After Customs Raids

Opposition India The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has come out with a statement after the allegation of evading customs duty. The company believes that the allegation mentioned during the investigation by DRI is an “industry-wide issue” and claims that several corporations are working on “structuring these payments”.

“We have a different view on the allegations mentioned in the SCN. We believe this is an industry-wide issue that many corporates are working on,” an Oppo India spokesperson said.

Oppo says it is reviewing the order it received from DRI and will respond to it as well as work further with government bodies involved in this investigation. “Oppo India is reviewing the SCN received from DRI, and we are going to respond to the notice, present our stand, and work further with the relevant government departments. Oppo India is a responsible corporate and believes in a prudent corporate governance framework. OPPO India will take such appropriate steps as may be necessary in this regard, including such measures as may be provided under law.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Oppo Mobiles India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corporation Limited – China (Oppo China), detected customs evasion of around Rs 4,389 crore.

The DRI also searched the office premises of Oppo India and the residences of its key employees, who are part of the management. The agency recovered incriminating evidence which indicates intentional mis-declaration in the details of certain items imported by Oppo India for use in manufacturing mobile phones.

Inquiries were also made from the senior management of Oppo India as well as the domestic suppliers of Oppo India. The investigation also revealed that Oppo India had made provisions for payment of ‘royalty’ and ‘license fee’ to various MNCs based in China in return for use of proprietary technology/brand/IPR licenses etc.
