Aurangabad derives its name from Aurangzeb, while Osmanabad was named after the 20th-century ruler of the princely state of Hyderabad.

Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Shirsat, who owes allegiance to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Monday said he will write a letter to the Prime Minister. Narendra Modi Demanded removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb from Aurangabad city.

Shirsat termed the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) protest against the renaming of Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar a “biryani party”.

A successive hunger strike led by AIMIM’s local MP Imtiyaz Jaleel is going on at the district collector’s office here since March 4.

Speaking to Marathi news channel ABP Majha, Shirsat claimed, “This is not a movement but a biryani party and the pictures of this party have also gone viral. Muslims in Aurangabad have no problem in changing their name. But the people of Hyderabad (AIMIM) have it.”

“Why do you (Jalil) have a problem with changing the name of the city? Are you a descendant of Aurangzeb? AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi visits (Aurangzeb’s) grave and bows,” the Shiv Sena MLA said.

He said that no day should be celebrated in memory of Aurangzeb and the remains of the Mughal emperor’s tomb should also be removed from Aurangabad.

“I will write to the Prime Minister with these demands. I will also meet the police commissioner as Jaleel is trying to disturb peace and harmony in the city.”

The BJP-led government at the Center has approved the renaming of Aurangabad city to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad city to Dharashiv in Maharashtra. Aurangabad derives its name from Aurangzeb, while Osmanabad was named after the 20th-century ruler of the princely state of Hyderabad.
