Winter storm hits Texas, West Virginia, several other US states; Over 1,800 flights canceled

New Delhi: Airlines canceled more than 1,800 flights in the United States on Wednesday after a snow storm hit Texas to West Virginia. A total of 1,897 flights in or out of the United States were canceled, while 750 flights were delayed as of 8.41 a.m. ET, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.

“This week’s winter storms are having an impact on our operations, accounting for a significant number of cancellations,” American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) said in a statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned in a tweet on Tuesday that travelers can expect to see snowy conditions in some areas, including Dallas, Fort Worth and Memphis, which could delay some flights.

“The winter storm will continue to bring dangerous effects to north and central Texas through at least Thursday morning,” the US National Weather Service said in its Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area forecast discussion.

Fort Worth, Texas-based American canceled nearly 800 flights, while low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) canceled 501 flights.

Southwest did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The latest cancellations came nearly a month after Southwest faced protests from the US government for canceling 16,700 flights during the holiday because bad weather affected its crew scheduling system.
