Wipro cuts salary offer to freshers awaiting onboarding; IT union NITES calls the move ‘unfair’

Bengaluru-headquartered IT services major, Wipro, recently reached out to candidates to whom it had earlier offered ₹6.5 lakh per annum (LPA), asking them whether an offer of ₹3.5 in annual compensation would be acceptable. them, instead. These candidates were reportedly waiting to board the ship.

IT sector employees’ union NITES has condemned the move, saying the decision is “unjust” and “against the principles of fairness and transparency”. NITES has demanded that the management reconsider its decision and hold meaningful talks with the union to find a mutually beneficial solution.

In a recent communication to candidates who have successfully completed the Velocity training program, Wipro said: “Like others in our industry we continue to assess global economies and customer needs which factor into our recruitment plans. Wipro further added that “We currently have few Project Engineer roles available for recruitment with an annual compensation of ₹3.5 Lakh. We would like to provide an opportunity to all our Velocity graduates in the FY23 batch to opt for these roles.”

When contacted on the issue, Wipro, in response to an e-mail query, said: “In light of the changing macro environment and, consequently, our business needs, we have had to adjust our onboarding plans.”

“The decision to cut the wages of the employees without prior consultation and negotiation is not only unjust but also against the principles of fairness and transparency.
