New Delhi: Indian para shuttler compete in Uganda Para Badminton International suffered a setback in multiple explosions near the team hotel in the capital Kampala on Tuesday.
Two bombings killed at least three civilians and caused panic in Kampala as terrified residents fled the city centre.
Head Coach of Indian Para Badminton Team, Gaurav Khanna He said the blast happened about 100 meters from the hotel but everyone was safe and there was nothing to worry about.
“Some players were on their way to the badminton hall when the blast happened. It caused a lot of chaos on the road. We also went back immediately but things are fine now. We have spoken to the embassy and there is nothing to worry, Khanna told PTI.
“It won’t have any impact on our schedule and the tournament goes on. We have a huge contingent, consisting of 54 players competing in the tournament.”
According to local police, it was a coordinated attack by extremists and three suicide bombers were killed in the blasts.
Tokyo Paralympic gold medalist Pramod Bhagat, who is part of the Indian contingent, who participated in the tournament also said that they are safe and there is nothing to worry about.
Bhagat said, “We are safe. There was a blast. Nothing to worry about. It hasn’t affected our schedule. We didn’t feel much of it. There was a bit of chaos but everyone is safe and the tournament was as scheduled,” Bhagat said. Will do accordingly.” Will start his campaign on Wednesday.
