Though the incident took place on Saturday (April 15), it came to light on Sunday when the local people found a mound of sand near Murthikuppam cemetery, from which the foot of the 27-day-old girl was sticking out.

Police said the wife of the accused Sangeetha, 32-year-old Kumarasan from Korattur in Chennai had recently moved to Puducherry. Sangeeta gave birth to a baby girl. Kumarasan was a drunkard and often quarreled with his wife over the birth of a child.
