A 60-year-old woman was found dead on Saturday.
T. Annalakshmi, a resident of Dindigul district, met with an accident recently. Her daughter Kalaiselvi, who lives in Salem, took a house for rent at Saraswati Nagar in Kondappanaickenpatti, and Annalakshmi stayed there alone. Kalaiselvi used to visit her every day to give food. On Saturday morning, neighbours found smoke emanating from the house and the door locked from inside. They alerted the Kannankurichi police, who broke the door and found Annalakshmi charred to death in the bed. The police sent the body to Salem Government Hospital for a post-mortem and registered a case.
Police sources said that as she was unable to walk on her own, a switch box was installed near the bed to turn on the fan. Police suspect that Annalakshmi might have suffered an electric shock while turning the switch on and the bed might have caught fire.
