Hundreds of people died in floods triggered by incessant rains in western Tripura on Saturday, leaving one woman dead. However, the water has started receding after a large part of the capital city was submerged on Friday, though the meteorological department had predicted heavy rains till June 21.

The Tripura government has deployed paramilitary Assam Rifles to assist the NDRF, fire and emergency services and state security forces to intensify rescue and relief operations. Hundreds of people have taken shelter in relief camps in Agartala.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, contesting from Town Bardowali constituency in the Assembly by-elections to be held on June 23, visited some of the flood affected areas and relief camps. To know the condition of the affected people, candidates of Congress and other parties also waterlogged the roads.

The Chief Minister also monitored the situation from a central control room equipped with several live imagery equipment.

On Saturday, he presided over a review meeting with the officials regarding the overall situation due to incessant rains. “The emphasis is on providing necessary assistance to the relief centers,” Dr Saha tweeted.

Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb also visited some waterlogged areas. He appreciated the youth wing workers of BJP for helping the helpless people.

A woman died after she drowned in flood waters in nearby Chandrapur here, police said. He also warned that the water of Howrah river was flowing above the critical mark.

NDRF personnel are alerting people living on the banks of Howrah river through the public address system. The state government has opened some control rooms and teams have been formed to continuously monitor the situation.

The flood situation in Agartala inevitably affected campaigning in two assembly constituencies, but it remained unaffected in the remaining two constituencies in Dhalai and North districts respectively. Despite the bad weather, star campaigners of BJP, Congress and Trinamool Congress have started joining the campaign.
