A 34-year-old female maid, who was not wearing a helmet, died in a road accident near Teynampet on Chennai’s Anna Salai in the early hours of Sunday in a bike taxi. The tragic incident, which happened on the victim’s birthday, highlighted the serious issue of many bike taxi riders, which operate through transport aggregator apps, not giving helmets to riders who hire their services.

Police said that Sevika was working as a make-up artist in a television news channel. She was staying with her friend in Mambalam and took the help of a bike taxi to meet her parents living in Vyasarpadi to celebrate her birthday. The victim was traveling in a two-wheeler driven by S Anandan and when they were proceeding towards Anna Salai near Kamaraj Arangam, an unidentified truck hit the vehicle from behind and overtook it.

Due to the collision, the maid, who was not wearing a helmet, fell down from the vehicle and suffered a head injury. He was taken to Government Royapettah Hospital for treatment where doctors declared him brought dead. Anandan, who was wearing a helmet, sustained minor injuries.

Pondy Bazar Traffic Investigation has registered a case and examined footage from closed circuit television cameras installed on the road to identify the truck that hit the two-wheeler.
