World Bank team inspects irrigation projects in Tiruchi, Ariyalur districts

A four-member team representing the World Bank on Tuesday inspected the development works carried out with the financial assistance of the bank in Tiruchi and Ariyalur districts.

Thirty-one irrigation tanks in Tiruchi district and 29 in Anicut and 19 in Ariyalur district are being refurbished under the Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization (TN IAM) project, supported by the World Bank, at a total cost of about Rs 56.95 crore.

The team inspected some refurbished irrigation tanks, including Kandiratirtham tank in Ariyalur district and Singalantapuram tank near Thuraiyur in Tiruchi district. The Kandirtheertham tank, built around 1,000 years ago during the reign of Raja Raja Chola, was renovated under the project at an investment of around ₹4.50 crore.

The Singalantapuram Tank and Thiruthalaiyur Anicut in Tiruchi district were also renovated under this project. The team included Farbod Yusufy, Senior Agriculture Specialist, Jopp Stoutjesdijk, Water Resources Management Specialist, Rama Subramaniam, Sustainable Development and Rural Development Specialist/Consultant, and Krishnan, Consultant, overseeing all three works and interacting with farmers on the benefits of renewables. PWD sources said that the team members will inspect other works in the delta districts on Wednesday.
