World Day 2022 to Combat Desertification and Drought: Theme, History and Significance

Celebrated every year on 17 June, the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, focuses on transforming degraded land into healthy land. The main objective of this day is to find achievable solutions to combat desertification. There is an urgent need to restore the degraded land which in turn will help in bringing economic resilience, increasing income and ensuring food security.

Every year this day is celebrated under a special theme. This year’s theme is ‘Together to rise above drought’. Announcing the theme of 2022 Desertification and Drought Day, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Executive Secretary, Ibrahim Thiaw said, “Drought has been a part of human and natural systems, but what we are experiencing now, She is pretty bad. due to human activity. The recent drought points to an uncertain future for the world. The lack of food and water, as well as wildfires due to severe droughts, have all intensified in recent years.”

Established in 1994, the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought was declared by the United Nations General Assembly. The day came into existence to raise public awareness about solutions to combat desertification, especially in areas that are facing severe drought. In 1995, people around the world celebrated the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought for the first time.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought: Significance

The day is extremely important as it is estimated that according to the United Nations, by 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity. In addition, about 2/3 of the Earth would be living in water-stressed conditions. By 2045, desertification could displace about 135 million people. Three-quarters of the Earth’s ice-free land has melted as a result of the increasing and never-ending demand for food, raw materials, highways and homes.
