World Deaf Day 2021: Here’s How You Can Prevent Deafness

This year 26 September is being observed as World Day of the Deaf. Since 2009, this international event is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of September all over the world. World Day of the Deaf, initiated by the United Nations, is observed to raise awareness and acquaint people with the challenges faced by deaf people, their families; and their achievements too. In its effort to educate and sensitize the general public, the United Nations devotes the entire last week of September to this cause, and refers to it as the International Week of the Deaf (IWDeaf).

Around 360 million people around the world are hearing impaired. Speaking of deafness, what about finding ways to prevent people from being deaf, ahead of the occasion of Day of the Deaf!

Here are some effective preventive strategies:

I. Protect your ears from loud noises.

I. Wear earmuffs/plugs: You can prevent noise-induced hearing loss by avoiding loud music, loud events (nightclubs, sporting events, gigs) that can damage your auditory nerves.

Second Give a break of 15 minutes: To rest your ear, stay away from noisy areas for 15 minutes if possible.

iii. Give 8 hours to recover: After exposure to extremely loud noise (85dB), give your ears 18 hours to rejuvenate.

iv. Use noise-canceling earphones or headphones to: Choose these ear pods to protect your ear from damage. In addition, you should avoid listening to music or anything else for more than 1 hour while using them; And don’t increase the volume to more than 60% of the maximum volume. This will help reduce your chances of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Busy traffic – 70 to 85dB

Motorbike – 90dB

Listening to music through headphones at full volume – 100 to 110dB

You can use smart phone apps that measure noise levels to get an idea.

Second. get regular ear exams

If you are in a noisy workplace or have a family history of hearing loss or hearing loss, you should have your hearing tested periodically as a precaution.

III. improve your lifestyle

Stop smoking, drinking alcohol, exercise daily instead, eat healthy, reduce stress, monitor blood pressure, heart health and blood sugar. Take vitamins (B12 is good for the ear), potassium, magnesium, iron-rich foods.

All these preventive measures can certainly reduce your chances of developing age-related hearing loss or NIHL.
