Bones become weak and brittle due to a decrease in mineral density. This condition is known as osteoporosis. When a person suffers from low bone density, a sudden pressure like sneezing can also cause a fracture. Diseases usually have symptoms, due to which it is easy to diagnose in the early stages. As far as Osteoporosis is concerned, it does not have any sharp symptoms and it progresses slowly hence it is named ‘silent disease’.
World Osteoporosis Day is celebrated across the world on 20 October to raise awareness about this disease. For the first time, the day was observed in 1996 by the National Osteoporosis Society of the United Kingdom. The theme for 2021 has been fixed as Serve Up Bone Strength.
On the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day, we bring you the early signs and later stage symptoms of the disease. The early signs may not always mean that you are suffering from this condition, hence, visit the doctor if necessary.
Early symptoms of osteoporosis:
Due to the low mineral density in the bones, the person’s handcuffs become weak.
Weak and brittle nails can be a sign of osteoporosis.
Later stage symptoms:
loss of heightWeak bones cause narrowing of the spine that over time makes a person an inch or so smaller. As a result of a compression fracture of the spine, there may be a small curvature of the spine resulting in a forward bending (kyphosis).
shortness of breathWeak bones cause compression fractures of the spine, while a collapsed vertebra puts pressure on the lungs.
Bone fractures: If your bones are weak, brittle, or fragile, a powerful sneeze or twisting of the feet can result in a bone fracture.
Persistent pain in the lower back and neck.
Doctors always advise that it is important to diagnose osteoporosis at an early stage to avoid complications. Osteoporosis can be controlled by making lifestyle changes, medications, and dietary changes. But some non-healing fractures may also require surgical management in the form of replacement procedures or even spine surgery.
