World Rally Championship for Beginners: All you need to know about the sport

An in-depth overview of the way WRC works.

Rally is a type of motorsport where drivers compete against the clock. And it’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. One of the main points in which it differs from Formula 1 is that the drivers do not race directly against each other; Instead, they race against the clock. Extremely competitive, the World Rally Championship (WRC) features some of the world’s leading manufacturers. And of course, the finest drivers on the planet. But behind the racing is always a high-tech sophisticated operation that is overseen by each team. Here is a complete overview of WRC.

Only four teams race in the WRC, namely Hyundai Shell Mobis, Hyundai 2C Competition, M-Sport Ford and Toyota Gazoo Racing. Each team has multiple driver partnerships, and the cars these racers drive are all specially modified versions of street vehicles. While Hyundai is driven by the i20s, the Toyota Gazoo runs on the Yaris. They have all been overhauled as per Rally specifications. Basic rules include 380 horsepower, a six-speed gearbox, four-wheel drive and a minimum weight of 1,190 kg. 2022 will be the first year in which hybrid drivetrains will be installed in these cars’ 1.6L turbocharged engines. Bespoke aerodynamic packages are also part of the rally setup.

A variety of racing venues are part of the World Rally Championship. The fact that drivers get to test their skills on all kinds of terrain and weather around the world makes the competition all the more interesting. While some races take place on dirt tracks, some take place on tarmac and some even require driving in snowy conditions.

In each event, several routes are established in the local area. Their length can be anywhere from 3 km to 35 km. The main thing you need to understand about rally racing is that it happens in stages. Phase One is a one-time trial that each team runs throughout the weekend. Each car will run at least twice on different stages on each route. They can run the route twice a day. Each day is called a ‘leg’.

The time in which the driver completes a stage is recorded. And each time is combined with the previous step. At the end of the weekend, you get the cumulative time of each driver. However, things are not always so simple. As is often the case, different punishments change that time. These can be used to cut corners, make some repairs, etc. The latter with the shortest time is the winner. Like Formula 1, points are awarded every race weekend in the WRC, and these determine the annual champion.

If you have seen the World Rally Championship, then you must be definitely thinking about the job of co-drivers. They exist because rally drivers can’t miss every twist and turn in the track. A co-driver sits in the passenger seat, guiding the driver throughout the rally, so that the driver can build up the car’s speed and find the right gear. The co-driver reads from “pace notes” that are created during practice sessions before the race.
