World Remembrance Day 2021 for Road Traffic Victims: History, Theme and Significance

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) fact sheet, every year approximately 1.3 million people die from fatal road traffic accidents and more than 20 to 50 million people suffer non-fatal injuries, many of whom are disabled. The data also sheds light on how traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29.

This not only causes deaths but also causes serious economic losses to the countries. Road accidents cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product (GDP).

In India, 1,51,000 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2019 and these deaths remain a serious cause for concern.

World Remembrance Day 2021 for Road Traffic Victims: History

World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims was started by Road Peace in 1993 to highlight it as a serious issue that needs to be addressed. In 2005, the United Nations endorsed it as a Global Day observed every third Sunday in November each year to acknowledge the victims of road traffic injuries and their families. Since then World Remembrance Day has been celebrated and promoted around the world by several governments, international agencies and groups.

It is a day of remembrance for all the people around the world who lost their lives, limbs or were seriously injured on the streets everywhere.

Also, on this day we acknowledge the important work of emergency services; Highlighting the typically insignificant legal response to road deaths and injuries, advocating for better support for victims and their families, and promoting evidence-based actions to prevent these tragedies.

The United Nations General Assembly has also set an ambitious goal of halving the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2030 by cooperating with countries on road safety.
