World Scout Day: History

Scouting was founded over a century ago, in 1907, in the United Kingdom. The first Boy Scout camp was organized by Lord Baden-Powell, a ragtag group of 20 youths. After the camp the founder’s book ‘Scouting for Boys’ became an instant hit. During the next few years, the movement grew rapidly, taking on a global character.

Who Was Lord Robert Baden-Powell?

  1. Lord Baden-Powell was born on this day in 1857 in Paddington, London.
  2. He joined the army as a sub-lieutenant in 1876 and participated in the Boer War of 1899.
  3. He was promoted to the rank of Major-General by none other than Queen Victoria herself.
  4. Lord Baden-Powell was more than a soldier – he was also a teacher and writer.
  5. He wrote his thoughts on Scouting in his book, laying the foundation for the Boy Scout movement.
  6. Scouting for Boys became a guide for youth organizations globally. It provided a framework for developing activities that would make children more active, kind and loyal.
  7. Taking the movement to the international stage, Lord Baden-Powell established the International Scout Chalet in Kandersteig, Switzerland in 1925. It is currently known as the Kandersteeg International Scout Centre.
  8. He spent a few years in Africa, until his unfortunate demise in 1941.
