World Sight Day 2021: Tips for Better Eye Health

India is home to over 20 percent of the planet’s blind population, most of whom live in villages. Untreated glaucoma and refractive errors are the biggest causes of visual loss in the country. With “Love Your Eyes” being the theme of this year’s World Sight Day celebrations, we are sharing five essential eye care tips below.

take a break from the screen

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced many people to work from home and spend hours in front of computer screens. Many people spent their leisure time glued to their mobile phones. Such activities cause eye strain, dry eyes, red eyes, twitching of the eyes, headache, blurred vision and nearsightedness. According to the 20-20-20 rule, people should look away from their screens for 20 seconds every 20 minutes and look at something about 20 feet away.

essential eyewear

Ultraviolet rays coming from the Sun have the shortest wavelength, high energy and can damage our vision. Mobile phone and computer monitor screens emit blue light, which is closest to ultraviolet light in the energy spectrum and can tire our eyes. Special blue light filtering glasses, sunglasses or computer screen protectors can help reduce damage to our vision.

healthy food for healthy eyes

Antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E, some carotenoids and zinc and copper reduce eye degeneration. Oranges, strawberries, carrots, peas, cabbage, cauliflower, pumpkin, papaya, spinach, tomatoes, cashews, peanuts, almonds are good sources of such nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish such as salmon and tuna, walnuts and flaxseed also help reduce eye damage.

sleep well

Eyes need rest after tiring those eye muscles all day. Sleeping relaxes the tense muscles and nerves of the eyes and helps them to heal and restore lubrication through tears.

eye exercises

Rotating the eyeballs, warming the palms by rubbing them together and then placing them over your eyes, lightly massaging the eyes with your thumbs, energizes our eye muscles and reduces fatigue. Warm-up exercise and walking exercise increase blood circulation, which also benefits our eyes.

eye exam

Periodic eye exams are a must. This will help in diagnosing and treating the eye diseases that the patient may have.
