Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by 8 wickets in their Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 match at the DY Patil Sports Academy here on Thursday.
Yastika Bhatia top-scored with 41 as Mumbai Indians chased down the target of 106 in 15 overs, while Hayley Mathews scored 32 and Nate Sciver-Brunt scored 23 not out. Alice Capsi and Tara Norris took one wicket each for Delhi Capitals.
Chasing a target of 106, Mumbai Indians Their openers Hayley Mathews and Yastika Bhatia thrashed the Delhi bowlers all around the ground. Mathews hit Shikha Pandey for three back-to-back fours.
The pair of Yastika and Mathews scored runs at a fast pace and completed the team’s half-century in the 7th over of the game.
Tara Norris gave a big blow to Mumbai by dismissing Yastika for 41 runs in the 9th over of the game. After this, Mathews lost his wicket to Alice Capsey after scoring 32 runs.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur handled the changes as they kept scoring runs by smashing boundaries. In the 15th over on the last ball, Siever-Brunt hit a brilliant four to give Mumbai Indians an 8-wicket win over Delhi Capitals.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians bowled out Delhi Capitals for 105 runs in 18 overs with the brilliant spells of Sayka Ishaq, Issy Wong and Hayley Mathews.
Mathews, Ishaq and Wong took three wickets respectively while Pooja Vastrakar took one wicket. Meg Lanning scored the highest 43 runs for Delhi Capitals while Jemima Rodrigues scored an inning of 25 runs.
Sayka Ishaq fielded first, dismissing opener Shafali Verma for 2 in the second over of the game. Right-handed batsman Alice Capsey came out to bat again but the batsman failed to score big as she returned after scoring just 6 runs.
Issy Wong took her first wicket of the match, dismissing Marijane Kapp for only 2 runs. After this Jemimah Rodrigues came to bat and she scored 13 runs with the help of three fours in Nat Sciver-Brunt’s over.
After 10 overs, the score for Delhi Capitals read 58/3. Meg Lanning then shifted gears and hit three consecutive fours in Amelia Kerr’s over to collect 14 runs. For Delhi, Rodrigues handled the power hitting from the other end.
However, Rodrigues’ stay at the crease came to an end as Ishaq dismissed him for 25 in the 13th over of the game. Delhi Capitals lost the wickets of Jemimah Rodrigues, Meg Lanning, Jess Jonassen and Minnu Mani in quick succession within 2 overs.
Lanning returned after scoring 43 while Jonassen and Mani could not even score double digits. Wong then dealt a double blow to Delhi Capitals as he dismissed Tanya Bhatia for 4 and Radha Yadav for 10 in the 17th over of the game.
Mathews claimed the last wicket of batsman Tara Norris and helped bundle out Mumbai Indians for 105 in 18 overs.
