A large number of citizens enthusiastically participated in this international yoga day The event was organized on Tuesday at the Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium near Bullayya College here. Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur was one of them.
The participants reached the stadium early in the morning and laid their yoga mats on the large wooden floor as the organizers guided them through various techniques. Women and children also participated in the meeting.
Besides Mr. Thakur, Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Authority K. Ram Mohan Rao, Mayor G. Hari Venkata Kumari, District Collector A. Mallikarjuna, Joint Collector K. Viswanathan, MLC PVN Madhav and MLC V. Kalyani were among the performers. ,
‘Yoga can cure where medicine has failed’
Addressing the gathering, Shri Thakur said that Yoga has proved that it can cure some diseases, where medicine had failed. He credited the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for many countries of the world to adopt June 21 as International Yoga Day. He said that yogis and sages have made yoga their way of life since time immemorial to remove diseases and stay healthy.
“With the spread of Yoga across the globe, India’s name and fame will spread across the globe,” said Mr. Thakur.

Collector Mallikarjuna described yoga and meditation as the “best remedy” for all lifestyle disorders. He urged the younger generation to practice yoga at least 45 minutes a day.
VPA President Ram Mohan Rao said that yoga provides a simple way to live longer and healthier. He called it unfortunate that yoga was neglected in his native land due to “cultural invasions”. He also recalled how ancient Indians maintained a healthy life by consuming traditional food and indigenous medicines.
Mayor G. Hari Venkata Kumari said that yoga helps one deal with the pressures of modern life.
