Critics feel he may lack intensity when he returns to the blue jersey. However, Gambhir did not think so.

“I am sure India will see the best of Virat Kohli, be it red-ball cricket or white-ball cricket. Also the kind of passion he has shown for so long or the energy that you will find in Virat Kohli, whether he is the captain or not.
“I am sure he is going to make India proud, he will keep scoring runs in white-ball cricket or red-ball cricket. At the same time, there will be two different people who will probably give their views, their vision for the team.”

He said that Kohli is one player who will not lose his passion and energy despite all the off-field saga happening around him. He said that no captaincy can set him free which means a fresh, more aggressive Kohli.
“As is the role of Rohit Sharma in red-ball cricket, it is just that there is no captaincy. It may just free Virat Kohli more. With the pressure of captaincy not on his shoulders, he can be more dangerous in white-ball cricket.”
The BCCI sacked Kohli from his post and President Sourav Ganguly upheld the decision. He added that Kohli was not asked to step down as T20 captain but decided not to listen, citing workload. BCCI did not want many captains in white-ball cricket, he exclusively informed News18.
